Muay Thai:

In early days there were no rules and no protection. Death was common.

Fighters are taught to also hit with the hard shin bone. It can hit with as much force as a baseball bat.

Fighters are taught that kicks don’t count unless they damage the other person.

Every cadet at the military academy is still trained in Muay Thai.

There is a special technique called “Madrit” taught to only select soldiers and involved powerful, deadly blows.

The most devastating blow is the elbow blow. It works like the point of a knife. All the force is concentrated into one small, hard area.

The knee strike is used after getting the attacker in close to neutralize their power.

The power of the legs is used to power an upward thrusting double punch under the opponent’s chin. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ssFRtSpjLho&feature=related

There is a secret form of Muay Thai known in “Chaya” (sp) taught in the lawless, borderland with Myanmar. It is battlefield fighting, used to harm a person and take them down fast.

Traditional training involves kicking banana trees to toughen shins, dodge lemons to improve accuracy and chopping through leech invested waters to avoid blinking.

SAVATE BOXING:

A French street-fighting boxing style.

Started in the Marsaille.

“Savatours” use powerful kicks and punches to attack their oppenants.

Kicking is used as much as punching. Contestants wear boots. They are a reminder of it’s origins among sailors, gang members and dock workers.

It began as a sailors game. They would use the ropes and other sailors to get balance and fight until one literally “hit the deck.”

Footage of street-fighting moves taught by a Paris cop.

Uses a piston-like move in which the leg lifts and drives the ridged heel bone into the top of the leg. The force can permanently damage the knee-cap. It can also be used to the hip to throw the center of balance.

Training is done with a cane, something that once could have been used for defence as swords and firearms were banned from wearing in public.

Savate is an intigral part of police and special forces training.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu:

A very intuitive style, based on ‘feeling your next move.’

The aim is to target your opponent and take them down fast. Once you have them on the ground they are at your mercy.

It looks like rolling around but it’s really a technical science with thousands of moves. For example, just by lifting your hips the right way you can tip an opponant who’s on top of you over.

Some call it the most effective martial arts created.

Begun as a Samurai art form. Known as ‘the way of unbalancing.’

Krav Maga:

Krav Maga (Hebrew: קרב מגע‎, lit. contact combat) is a military hand-to-hand combat system developed in Israel, which assumes no quarter will be given, and emphasizes maximum threat neutralization in a "real life" context. It came to prominence following its adoption by various Israeli Security Forces.

Aggression and effort is crucial to self-defense. Krav Maga teaches how to use everything you can to get out of a dangerous situation.

It isn’t confined to one martial art technique.

All Israeli training centers around M16 semi-assault rifle. The gun can be used as more than just a shooting weapon. It can become a brutal hand to hand tool as an extension of your arms, using it like an elbow strike.

SYSTEMA:

Footage below of Secret Spetznas training facility.

Systema was once classified and secret.

There are no set stances in Systema.

Systema emphasizes proper breathing. Before you learn how to fight you learn how to breath.

Systema can be used to fight off multiple attackers

It involves a 3-dimensional free-flow approach to fighting

Systema is improvisational, relaxed, use any move that flows

The direction of punch relates to direction you want to send your attacker

Many Spetznas see themselves as Russian Orthodox warriors who exist to fight for family, country and God.

Systema has its roots in Cossack fighting – the original special forces. A style of “dance fighting” that influenced systema. Little is known about it’s roots. It was passed down from Cossack to Cossack. When the attacker hits the ground THEY ALWAYS FINISH THEM.

They say Cossacks are born with a “bullet in their mouth.” They learn to fight before they can walk. Religion was important. Children were taught to be afraid of no one except God.

At Assoff a force of 3,000 defeated 300,000 Turks in the 16th century. Built underground tunnels.

There is an Old Cossack game to teach not to be afraid of the knife and be familiar with the weapon. One person lies down while the other drops the knife on your bare chest.

Cossacks would train blindfolded, relying on breathing and instinct to fend off multiple attackers. The figure-eight movement is important to the success of he exercise.

MIXED MARTIAL ARTS:

Mixed martial arts (MMA) is a full contact combat sport that allows a wide variety of fighting techniques, from a mixture of martial arts traditions and non-traditions, to be used in competitions. The rules allow the use of striking and grappling techniques, both while standing and on the ground. Such competitions allow martial artists of different backgrounds to compete. The term may also be used, less correctly, to describe hybrid martial arts styles.

Modern mixed martial arts competition emerged in American popular culture in 1993 with the founding of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Initially based on finding the most effective martial arts for real unarmed combat situations, competitors of various arts were pitted against one another with minimal rules or concern for safety. In the following decade, MMA promoters adopted many additional rules aimed at increasing safety for competitors and to promote mainstream acceptance of the sport. Following these changes, the sport has seen increased popularity with pay per view reach rivaling boxing and professional wrestling.
